Something that us, the normal ones tend to overlook.

Assalamua'laikum.

As we are moving forward in every single aspects of the world, we shall not forget about the disabled. How do we help the disabled to take part in the community? It is believed that recently, disabled accessibility issue is gaining better priority from the community. Public transport that accessible for the disabled? Checked. Washroom for the disabled? Checked. Parking spot for the disabled? Checked. Shopping mall that have disabled accessibility? Checked. Last but not least, the mosque. Checked? Let us think again. As we can see, most of the mosque do not have disabled accessibility. I believe that both the able and disabled should have equal access to Islam since the 5 times a day prayers are compulsory. It is true that it is not compulsory to pray at the mosque, however have we ever wonder how they go to perform the Friday prayer ( Solat Jumaat)? Therefore, it is time that disability issue to be put into the Muslim community agenda. Within the Muslim community itself, people with disabilities tend to remain isolated and causing them to feel excluded from learning and engaging in spiritual and social activities. The majority of mosques and Islamic centres in the Malaysia are inaccessible for Muslims with physical disabilities.

Some of the basic modifications that can be done to meet the disabled needs;
1. Wheelchair Ramps - This is very important so that they can move around easily.
2. Bathrooms - Accessible for the disabled.
3. Wudhu' room - Suitable for the disabled
4. Mosque that has it’s own wheelchair -  Wheelchair user must transfer into the mosque's wheelchair          because nothing that touches the ground can touch the carpeted area.

In fact, there are a lot more we can do for them. They do not need us to fight for them, they can fight for their own rights, however as a human being, do we want to live in discourteous nation?

Wallahu'alam.
